It comes ready to go, just turn it on and play. Features dual SD cards, kind of a neat thing -- one card holds the system software, the other holds the games. You can pop the game card out and add additional games if you like, the directory structure is fairly self explanatory and all the usual emulators (and some less-usual ones) are here.
Battery life is good, and charging is pretty quick.
Performance is good, it's capable of handling anything up to PS1/N64 class games with minimal lag or stuttering. Screen quality is good, if a tad small. Plenty bright and sharp. Sound is OK, these classic games were not exactly hi-fi to begin with.
The OS is a somewhat customized ArkOS. You can change it, but your options are limited at present because community development on the platform is behind where it's at on some of the older and more established platforms. Particularly you'll have issues with the screen: this unit has a 4:3 screen, which fits better with retro games, but many of the existing operating systems expect a wider screen and don't work well with this aspect ratio.
There are plenty of teardowns on the web, so I'm not going to attach one here. I can recommend this, mostly for kids who have small hands and won't be bothered by the form factor, and probably are just going to want to play games and not tinker with the OS.
